Mandates of Production
The Production Department has a mandate to produce quality traditional medicine based on sustainably sourced medicinal herbs and traditional formula using modern production technology and incorporating GMP principles

Resources for Traditional Medicine
According to gso-ba rig-pa, more than 2990 different types of raw materials are known for use in the manufacture of traditional medicine and about 600 medicinal plant species have been identified in Bhutan. However, the MSP currently uses about 300 ingredients to manufacture 98 compounds that constitute as National Essential Traditional Medicine List and 14 additional products for commercial purposes. The main resource base around 90% of the prevailing traditional medicine is medicinal plant and the remaining part is derived from animal and mineral origins. The high altitude medicinal plants are sourced from altitude ranging from 3500 to 5000 meters above sea level (msl) and low altitude from 200 to 1500 msl. Although most of the plant ingredients are collected from wild, some of the species are now being cultivated/domesticated by the farmers. Perhaps medicinal plant collection may be one of the first economical activities initiated and sustained in this highland

Of the total 18.51 tons of raw materials procured (PRU inventory 2004-05), about 15.7 tons (85%) of it were collected within the country. The remaining 15% are mostly imported from India. The MSP procures or collects around 13.5 metric tons of raw ingredients on the average but this quantity is expected to double within 2 to 3 three years. This would ultimately exert pressure on the natural resources if conservation issues are not addressed and strategic utilization and sources not identified.

News

Menjong Sorig Pharmaceuticals particpated in the Bhutan Trade Show 2008 organised at the CICCC ground, Thimphu from 5-12 Nov. 2008. The participation was to celebrate the hundred years of peace and prosperity under the monarchy and the coronation of the Fifth King. During the Expo, the MSP team was able to promote the herbal products as well as generate funds through sale of such products.

The ITMS has also come up with few publications on gso-ba rig-pa related subjects. One of the publications is Menjong Sorig Journal. It is an annual publication of ITMS and contains reviews, comments and research findings related to gso-ba rig-pa. The publication is aimed at documenting and promoting gso-ba rig-pa practices in the country. A workshop will be conducted at RIHS Field Training Centre in Punakha from 20-26 Dec. 2008 on the editing and finalisation of Monograph Vol II. MSP has been developing Monographs on high altitude medicinal plants to standardize the medicinal plants used for traditional medicines and build standards and quality parameters to ensure the safety and quality of traditional medicines.

Following the above workshop, another workshop will be organised at the same venue from 26-31 Dec. 2008 in collaboration with the NITM. This workshop is aimed at enhancing research proposal development and paper writing skills of the traditional medicine practitioners. This workshop is a continuation of the workshop conducted in June 2007 at Bumthang Hospital where the participants were brifed on the various research methodologies and ethics related to research.

The survey for alternative sourcing of medicnal plants will be conducted in Pangbang starting from the beginning of january 2008 for a duration of 2 weeks. This survey is a continuation of the medicinal plants surveys and conducted to identify new collection sites to ease pressure on the old collection sites such as Lingshi. The MSP is concerned of the sustainability of medicinal plants resources and works towards promoting the collection of medicnal plants in a sustainable manner.

The tender for the annual supply of various medicinal ingredients will be out in Jan-Feb 2009.

MSP has a list of commercial herbal products (herbal tea, incense stick, neutraceuticals) on sale. The revenue generated from the sales of these products is deposited in the Revolving Fund which is used for the purchase of medicnal ingredients for the production of traditional medicines. By buying our products you are contributing to the traditional medical services in Bhutan. Since we engage farmers in the remote areas in the collection of medicinal plants, MSP also helps to generate income for the farmers.
